Dr Wendy Li and Marc Chao, Townsville Mindfulness Network
Mental health researcher and university lecturer, Marc Chao, is the first to tell you that mindfulness isn’t an overhyped wellness trend; it’s a clinically validated tool in modern psychology. While the intervention may have spiritual roots, he and fellow co-coordinator of the Townsville Mindfulness Network, Dr Wendy Li, are proving just how broadly applicable – and effective – it can be.
Driven to maximise the widespread appeal of mindfulness, the pair leads a Network of peers equally committed to compassionate, evidence-informed mental health care. The Townsville Mindfulness Network is supported by MHPN and forms part of a “supportive health ecosystem” across Northern Queensland. For Marc, it’s about creating a space where local practitioners can explore the real-world impact of psychosocial therapies.
“Whether it’s evaluating innovative interventions like trauma-informed mindfulness for veterans, or unpacking the latest meta-analytic findings, knowing that our collective work contributes directly to better mental health support and multidisciplinary practice keeps the passion alive,” he says.
