A Story from the Goondiwindi Mental Health Professionals Network

Mental health professionals in rural and regional areas often face unique challenges, such as isolation and limited access to resources. Yet within these challenges lies the opportunity to build strong, supportive professional communities that make a real difference. Networks like Goondiwindi, that encourage collaboration and peer support are helping to address these challenges.

Since 2017, Katherine Johnstone, an accredited mental health social worker, has co-coordinated the Goondiwindi Network playing a pivotal role in creating a space where what can feel like “a scattered network of services” becomes a connected, multidisciplinary community.

As a dedicated volunteer Network Coordinator, Katherine plays an important role in the network’s success ensuring meetings are meaningful, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of local professionals.

The network’s meetings draw in a diverse range of members, including psychologists, GPs, social workers, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Together, they engage in case-based discussions, share resources, and learn from guest speakers on topics relevant to their regional context.

By providing a platform for ongoing learning, networking and peer support, the network is helping bridge gaps, enhance professional development, and strengthen the community’s mental health services.

Katherine finds her role as Network Coordinator deeply rewarding, saying, “It’s been a privilege to be a welcoming face for new services and professionals arriving in our community.”

She also acknowledges the essential support provided by MHPN Project Officers, whose work ensures networks run smoothly and thrive, allowing her to focus on what she says really matters – “fostering connections and sharing knowledge”.

Reflecting on her experience, Katherine says she feels “honoured to be part of this program and look[s] forward to continuing in this role for many years to come”.
