Network Story: Sunshine Coast ADHD Mental Health Professionals’ Network

Clinical Neuropsychologist and Co-coordinator of the Sunshine Coast ADHD Network, Dr Laura Bennett, is the first to admit that ADHD network meetings don’t always move in a perfectly straight line. While befitting for a lively group prone to “bursts of laughter” and “just enough chaos to keep things interesting,” these meetings are also firmly grounded in research and clinical practice. They’re driven by the kind of collaborative thinking that is hard to replicate anywhere else, involving GPs, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and other allied health professionals.

As ADHD and other mental health issues become increasingly visible and prevalent, the Network remains committed to promoting their joint navigation across sectors. This engaged and curious community is equally focused on sparking new perspectives, using their lived experience and multidisciplinary expertise to deepen understanding of ADHD and improve the support available to consumers and carers.

“We all willingly embrace the complexity of the field,” Laura affirms.

“Smaller groups have organically formed within the Network, including WhatsApp chats where members use the space for informal debriefing. Referral pathways have significantly broadened for many as well.”

Laura and fellow Co-coordinator Ange Nennie, an ADHD and Executive Function Coach, started this Network four years ago after realising that nothing similar in the region existed at the time. The Sunshine Coast ADHD Network has since evolved markedly.

“Things shifted when we became part of the MHPN,” Ange explains.

“Having the administrative side handled by the team has given us more time and the creative freedom to really focus on the content and connection within the group.”

Growing steadily since its inception, the Network’s next meeting in mid-2026 will be the first held in a larger venue to accommodate increasing numbers. Meetings are also held online for those located interstate.
