Dr Lata Satyen

Dr. Lata Satyen is a Lecturer in Psychology at Deakin University and a registered psychologist. She has been teaching psychology for the last 15 years and conducting research in the area of migrant wellbeing and family violence. Her research examines the prevalence of family violence across migrant and non-migrant groups, migrant employees’ wellbeing and Australians’ attitudes towards refugees. She has presented her research in various arenas and has published her findings.

Lata is involved in community work in the area of family violence at various levels. She is the Vice-President of a parliamentary working group called ‘Jagriti’ to develop prevention and intervention strategies to deal with family violence in the Indian community. She is the Head of the Domestic Violence Panel of the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria, which provides support to victims of family violence and educates the community about the issue. Lata counsels victims, provides practical support, and conducts educational forums on a voluntary basis. She has created the ‘Indian Women’s Support Group’ (www.facebook.com/IndianWomensSupportGroup ) to provide informal support to Indian women who are experiencing family violence and other relationship-related difficulties.

Lata is an advisor on the Family Violence Committees of the Wyndham and Kingston Councils and conducts training and information sessions for CALD communities within those regions. She also serves as a member on the Deakin University ‘End Violence against Women Campaign’ committee.
