Dr Sabin Fernbacher

Sabin works as an independent consultant, facilitator, trainer, and lecturer. Before becoming a consultant, she held senior roles in the Victorian State Government (mental health), clinical mental health services and community agencies (sexual assault, family violence, homelessness & mental health).

Sabin teaches Contemporary Research and Practice in Family Violence in the Masters of Mental Health Science, Department of Psychiatry, at Monash University. As a consultant, Sabin assists individuals, teams, and organisations to address a range of areas including the intersection of trauma and mental health. She delivered statewide family violence training as part of the implementation of the Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria. Sabin developed the Victorian Chief Psychiatrist guideline and practice guide: family violence (2018). This was the first guideline published in Victoria to assist mental health services in responding to family violence in Victoria.

Developing policy guidance that can be translated into practice, supports staff, and ultimately makes a positive difference for those accessing services is one of Sabin’s areas of interest. Sabin’s particular interests include the intersection of trauma and mental health for individuals, organisations, and systems. She feels passionate about ‘making the world’ a more inclusive and kinder place.
