Lew Hess has worked as a social worker in the area of ethnic and cultural diversity since graduating in 1977. Working with impoverished communities in Bangladesh, the émigré Cambodian community in Melbourne and in academia, Lew has developed expertise in both cross-cultural and critically reflective practice.
From 2003 to 2017, Lew worked as manager of the Western Region of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture. Lew has also contributed to cross-cultural and reflective learning at Foundation House and to the wider refugee and asylum seeking sector.
Lew has also held an honorary appointment as Adjunct Professor with the School of Global Urban and Social Science at RMIT University.
Since 2017, Lew has been working as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker in private practice focusing on service provision to refugees, asylum seekers and people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
