Sandy Matthews

Director of Nursing, NSW

Sandy Matthews graduated from Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH)and went on to gain qualifications in Midwifery and Child and Family Health. She moved from working in Midwifery at RNSH to Tresillian in the mid 80s where as a Clinical Nurse Specialist she consolidated her experience in counselling, problem solving, management, and policy and procedures.

In 2000, the NSW Nurses Association encouraged her to move her career into Aged Care, which they identified as an area that offered an opportunity for change management.

A course in Accreditation in Aged Care through the College of Nursing assisted her to understand the flip side of clinical care and what was expected of the industry.

In 2008, Sandy as the Director of Nursing was commissioned by Avalon House on the Northern Beaches for over 10 years, to be involved in developing a cohesive team and strong relationships with Allied Health providers in the area. Her role involved providing emotional support to families and the elderly with care decisions and lifestyle choices.

More recently, Sandy has worked in Clinical Governance roles, as well as the Director of Nursing for several organisations in the Residential Aged Care sector in both Sydney and Regional areas.

Sandy Matthews has presented on the following MHPN activities:

The Mental Health Professionals’ Network (MHPN) respectfully acknowledges the Wurundjeri and the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin nation, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which our office is situated. We also acknowledge Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and pay our respects to their Elders past and present.
